Joe Baker

Hi, I’m Joe Baker, a portrait photographer based in Texas. I focus on high school and college graduates, model and fitness portfolios, professional headshots, and family photos. Using off‑camera flash lets me unleash my creativity and helps my images standout from the crowd. Besides taking photos, I also run workshops, mentor, and educate photographers who want to elevate their craft. My goal is to help everyone be at their best whether they are in front of my camera or if I am teaching another photographer.

Overview

A hands on portrait workshop focused on what matters most lighting and lens choice. Learn to shoot with intention and confidence.
Light and Lens is a hands on creative portrait workshop focused on the two things I constantly preach because they matter more than anything else behind the camera your lighting and your glass. Cameras change. Trends change. Lighting and lenses are what truly shape your images. This workshop is led by Ray Alvarez, Westcott Top Pro, creative portrait photographer, and mentor behind Shoot With Ray. If you have been following my work online, this workshop is built around that same signature style. Bold lighting, clean compositions, and intentional creative choices. This is not a casual shoot around. This is a structured educational workshop where I will be teaching, demonstrating, and guiding you through real world creative decisions. What This Workshop Is About Most photographers focus heavily on camera bodies and settings but feel unsure when it comes to confidently choosing the right lens or fully understanding how aperture and lighting interact. In this workshop we simplify that process. You will learn how to Build strong portraits by prioritizing lighting first Choose the right lens based on intent not guesswork Understand how focal length affects compression perspective and storytelling Use fast lenses with confidence instead of fear Decide when shooting wide open enhances the image and when stopping down makes more sense We will break down how aperture impacts depth of field subject separation light control and overall mood so you are no longer second guessing your choices during a shoot. Workshop Structure The workshop will feature two fully built creative portrait sets inside the studio. Attendees will rotate between both sets throughout the workshop Each setup will showcase different lighting approaches and lens decisions Live instruction and demonstrations at each set Hands on shooting time with guidance direction and real feedback This rotating format allows you to see how lighting and lens choice affect the final image in multiple scenarios instead of just one look. Lighting Focus We will cover how to Shape and control light for creative portraits Understand light placement and why it changes everything Modify light to match the mood you are trying to create Use lighting tools with intention instead of guessing All lighting will be provided. You will see exactly how the sets are built, how the light is shaped, and how to recreate the look in your own sessions. Lens Focus and Glass Philosophy Lens choice is not about owning everything. It is about understanding what each lens gives you creatively. Throughout the workshop we will talk through real world lens selection using fast primes and practical focal lengths often used in portrait and branding work. Sigma lenses will be referenced as part of the discussion around fast glass sharpness and creative flexibility, plus how different focal lengths can completely change the final feel of the portrait. We will also talk about what happens when you shoot wide open versus stopping down and when each choice makes sense depending on the look you want. The goal is for you to leave knowing how to confidently pick the right lens for the job instead of defaulting to the same option every time. What You Will Walk Away With A clear understanding of how to combine lighting and lens choice More confidence shooting wide open when it serves the image A repeatable process for deciding which lens to use and why Practical lighting knowledge you can apply immediately Strong images for your portfolio from two unique creative sets Who This Workshop Is For This workshop is ideal for Portrait and branding photographers Photographers transitioning into studio work Shooters who feel unsure about lens selection Creatives who want more intention behind their lighting and aperture choices All experience levels are welcome. You do not need to be advanced to attend. You just need to be ready to learn and experiment. What to Bring Your camera One or two lenses you enjoy shooting with or want to understand better Curiosity and a willingness to try new approaches All lighting sets and studio resources will be provided.

We are photographers living in the era of video. While video has become an important part of how photographers are discovered and trusted, being in front of the camera does not come naturally to everyone. This class is based on a pre conference program taught at Imaging USA 2026 and has been refined through direct attendee feedback to better address the real challenges photographers face when creating video for social media. In this session, photographer, podcaster, and educator Jean Carlo Peñaloza shares a practical system for creating video content designed specifically for photographers who feel more comfortable behind the camera. The focus is on clarity, confidence, and execution rather than expensive gear or complex workflows. What this class is
  • A clear, practical approach to creating video for social media
  • Designed for photographers at any stage, from beginners to those already posting
  • Focused on systems that fit real working lives
  • Built to help you feel more comfortable on camera without performing
What this class is not
  • A gear heavy or software specific deep dive
  • An editing masterclass
  • About being on every platform
  • About perfection or going viral
How the class is structured Pre Production - How to create clarity before the camera turns on. This includes choosing the right platform, understanding what different platforms reward, and creating direction so you know what to say and why it matters. Production - How to record video confidently, especially when working solo. This block emphasizes priorities in this order: audio first, composition and framing, lighting, and lastly camera choice, with systems designed to work using your phone if needed. Post Production - How to finish and publish content without getting stuck. This section focuses on decision making, reducing friction, and understanding when different tools make sense so consistency feels achievable. Questions are welcomed throughout the session, with time reserved for open discussion and real world examples. What attendees will walk away with
  • A clearer understanding of how to approach video content
  • Practical systems they can apply immediately
  • Greater comfort being on camera without needing to perform
This class is ideal for photographers who know video matters, but would still rather be behind the camera.

Class Description

Photographing dancers is about more than just freezing a jump. It’s about timing, body language, and trust. In this hands-on workshop, led by Heather Larkin you’ll experience a live, tethered photo session with a professional dancer while learning the technical and creative skills that make a dance image truly amazing. Then, put your knowledge into practice: you’ll get the chance to photograph live dance models in several in studio setups This extended shoot time lets you experiment with lighting, angles, and movement with feedback from people who know what the move should look like… About the instructor: Heather is a photographer and educator, teaching classes on photography all over the USA.
