Take the Leap: How Image Competition Can Transform Your Photography
When I first dipped my toes into image competition, I had no idea how much it would change my approach to photography. What started as a mix of curiosity and big-time intimidation quickly turned into one of the most impactful aspects of my growth as an artist. If you’re a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the Florida Professional Photographers (FPP), or the Professional Photographers of Central Florida (PPCF), and you haven’t yet explored this side of professional development, let me encourage you—take the leap.

Why Image Competition Matters
For many photographers, image competition feels daunting. Putting your work out there for critique takes courage, but it’s an invaluable step toward refinement. The process isn’t just about winning awards; it’s about seeing your work through the lens of experienced judges and understanding how small refinements can make a major impact. Through competition & image evaluation, I’ve learned to elevate my compositions, refine my storytelling, and master technical execution in ways I never would have on my own. You don’t know what you don’t know, you know?
The Role of PPA’s Merit Image Review
One of the key programs that helped shape my work is PPA’s Merit Image Review process. This tool allows photographers to submit works on a monthly basis and optionally order detailed critiques, helping them refine their skills and grow in their craft. Based on PPA’s Twelve Elements of a Merit Image—such as impact, composition, technical excellence, and storytelling—photographers gain valuable insights to improve their work. It’s an incredible resource for learning and motivation, empowering PPA members to push their artistic and technical boundaries.

The PPA Degree Program: A Path to Professional Growth
Via PPA’s Merit Image Review process, one can earn merits toward a structured degree program that rewards professional achievement. Whether you’re working toward your Master of Photography (M.Photog.), Photographic Craftsman (Cr.Photog.), or other designations, each step is a testament to your commitment to growth. Participating in Merit Image Review, earning merits, and engaging with the PPA communities contribute to achieving these degrees.
Personally, working toward & achieving my PPA Master of Photography (M.Photog.) degree has pushed me to be more intentional about my craft. It’s not just about earning recognition—it’s about continually improving and contributing to the photographic industry as a whole.
Getting Involved: Start Where You Are
If you’re a PPCF member, you already have a supportive community of photographers who can help guide you through this process. We’re lucky that one of our member benefits includes image review & image competition. We hold two reviews per year and two image competitions per year. Participating in these events, receiving feedback, and engaging in competition will help refine your work. Whether you start with a single image review or dive headfirst into PPA’s Merit Image Review, each step forward will make you a stronger photographer.
So, if you’ve been on the fence about image competition, consider this your sign. Take the leap, challenge yourself, and watch your work evolve. You’ll be amazed at how much you grow—not just as a photographer, but as an artist and professional.
